Silver has claimed the spotlight in global markets, surpassing its record highs set in 1980 and climbing above $50/oz. for the first time in decades. What began as part of a shift into safe-haven assets has escalated into a full-blown supply squeeze, fueled by tightening inventories, industrial demand, and geopolitical uncertainty. The surge comes as gold has also continued its ascent, rising beyond $4,300/oz. and reinforcing the momentum behind the broader precious metals rally. With widening fiscal deficits, wavering currencies, and unpredictable trade policies, both metals have reasserted their roles as reliable shelters during turbulent times.

The silver in London’s bullion vaults has been drawn down to the lowest levels in years as global demand continues to outpace mine production. Earlier this year, large shipments of silver were redirected to the United States to get ahead of possible tariffs, draining the supply in London and driving borrowing costs sharply higher. Strong demand from India and China—both major consumers of silver for jewelry and industrial purposes—has only tightened the market further. Growing demand from renewable energy projects and manufacturing has deepened supply deficits that have persisted since 2020. Silver is critical in solar panels, electric vehicles, and electronics, meaning every advance in clean energy or technology strains already-limited output. Production in key countries such as Mexico, Peru, and China remains hampered by regulatory and environmental constraints, leaving little relief on the horizon.

Analysts caution that silver’s relatively small and illiquid market could invite short-term volatility, yet long-term outlook remains strong. Bank of America projects silver reaching $65/oz. by 2026 (and gold could reach $5,000/oz.), citing low interest rates, ongoing fiscal imbalances, and persistent supply shortages. If these forces endure, the precious metals rally may continue into 2026 and beyond.
