Americans are heading to the polls for the 2026 midterm elections, but the results may matter less for gold than what happens after the polls close. According to a new analysis from the World Gold Council, U.S. election outcomes have historically had no consistent or significant effect on gold prices. Instead, the economic policies that follow tend to have a greater influence.

Following President Trump’s election victories in 2016 and 2024, gold initially fell while stocks rose. But much of that early market reaction later reversed as attention shifted toward government policy. This year’s midterm elections could bring a similar shift in focus, with several possible outcomes creating conditions that support higher gold prices.

If Democrats gain control of Congress, political gridlock could lead to legal challenges, unpredictable policymaking, and greater uncertainty—potentially increasing demand for gold. Changes to government spending and the ongoing conflict involving Iran could also lower inflation and interest rates, creating additional support for gold prices.

Meanwhile, tighter AI regulations or reduced federal support could put additional pressure on technology stocks already facing questions about their soaring costs and future profits. A resulting stock market downturn and weaker economic growth could make gold more attractive as Americans look to diversify their savings.

Even if Republicans maintain control of Congress, the economic pressures supporting gold demand could persist. Federal debt, inflation, geopolitical tensions, and concerns about an AI-driven market downturn will remain important factors regardless of the election results.

The bottom line is that gold has potential paths to higher prices under either political outcome. While no election result guarantees a rally, the economic risks that have supported demand for gold aren’t going away simply because Americans are casting their votes.
