History of the 1 oz. Gold American Eagle Type 2 Coin

Authorized by the Gold Bullion Act of 1985 signed into law by President Ronald Reagan, the Gold American Eagle quickly became a world standard for gold bullion coinage, competing and surpassing the likes of the South African Gold Krugerrand and the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf. Gold American Eagle coins have been produced in 1 oz., half-ounce, quarter-ounce, and tenth-ounce denominations, all struck from 22-karat gold and all featuring the same patriotic obverse design. In 2021, the U.S. Mint retired the original “Family of Eagles” reverse design. By law, the new reverse will appear on the Gold American Eagle Type 2 coin for at least 25 years.

The 1 oz. Gold American Eagle Type 2 Coin Design

The Obverse Gold Eagle Design: Lady Liberty

In the history of the United States Mint, one design is most often considered as the most beautiful ever struck: the $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle gold coin, minted between 1907 and 1933. So when it came time for the U.S. Mint to create a new world standard for gold bullion coinage in 1986, they resurrected Saint-Gaudens’ beloved obverse design.

Lady Liberty is displayed in full glory, with one foot raised. As her robes flow around her, she proudly holds a torch aloft in one hand and an olive branch in the other. Behind her, the Capitol building appears amid a field of sunrays. It’s a powerful representation of the American spirit that has captured imaginations for more than 115 years.

The Reverse Gold Eagle Type 2 Design: Eagle Profile

Since the founding of the United States Mint in 1792, eagles have appeared on U.S. coinage as full-bodied figures, their wings spread wide. In 2021, a new chapter of American coinage began with the release of the new Type 2 reverse for the Gold American Eagle. Designed by Jennie Norris, the Type 2 reverse features a close-up profile of a bald eagle in incredible detail. Per U.S. law, this design will be featured on the Gold American Eagle for at least 25 years.

Surrounding the profile are the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and IN GOD WE TRUST, as well as the coin’s legal-tender denomination, weight, and precious metal content.
