A History of the 1/2 oz. Gold Eagle Type 2 Coin

By the mid-1980s, there was a call for Americans to once again be allowed to purchase freshly struck, government-guaranteed precious metals. In years past, South Africa, Canada, and other nations had already begun issuing their own gold bullion coins. And so Congress passed the Gold Bullion Act of 1985, which was then signed into law by President Ronald Reagan. The following year, the first Gold American Eagle coins were released to the public, allowing Americans to diversify their portfolios with all-new U.S.-backed, 22-karat gold. The Gold American Eagle was issued in four denominations—one-ounce, half-ounce, quarter-ounce, and tenth-ounce—and quickly dominated the world gold market, becoming one of the top gold bullion coin series in the world.

35 years later, in mid-2021, the United States Mint updated the reverse (back or “tails”) of the Gold American Eagle with a new “Type 2” design, ushering in a new era of American gold ownership.

The 1/2 oz. Gold American Eagle Type 2 Coin Design

The Obverse Gold Eagle Design: Lady Liberty

There is one American gold coin design that is said to stand head and shoulders above all others: the 1907 $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle gold coin, which featured a stunning image of Lady Liberty standing before the Capitol with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other.

When it came time to release the new Gold American Eagle coin in 1986 mint officials knew it was time to introduce a new generation of gold owners to this beloved design, which was originally struck from 1907 to 1933. It has remained the obverse design of the Gold American Eagle coin since its inception in 1986.

The Reverse Gold Eagle Type 2 Design: Eagle Profile

In 2021, the U.S. Mint celebrated the 35th anniversary of the Gold American Eagle by updating its design and introducing an all-new “Type 2” reverse. Designed by Jennie Norris, the Type 2 Gold American Eagle reverse features an intricate close-up portrait of a fierce bald eagle. Showcasing the fine detail made possible by today’s minting technology, the design is as powerful as it is beautiful.
