The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is warning that the AI boom poses a growing threat to global financial stability.

In its latest Global Financial Stability Report, the IMF raises concerns about soaring AI stock prices, rising debt, and the enormous amounts of money companies are spending on AI development. If those companies fail to deliver the profits needed to justify their spending, the resulting market downturn could spread far beyond the technology sector.

Companies are spending billions of dollars building data centers and buying the equipment needed to power AI systems, often taking on substantial debt in the process. The IMF also warns about “circular financing,” wherein AI companies provide funding to other businesses, which then use that money to purchase products and services from the AI companies providing them money. These arrangements tie the financial health of major AI companies together, potentially allowing problems at one company to spread quickly to others.

The consequences could be significant for the broader stock market. Just seven major technology companies now account for more than 35% of the S&P 500, meaning a sharp decline in their stock prices could drag down the entire index. The IMF warns that an AI-driven market correction could also force companies to cut spending, weaken economic growth, and trigger further stock market losses around the world.

For Americans concerned about protecting their savings and retirement, these warnings highlight the risks of relying too heavily on stocks and other conventional financial assets. Physical gold has historically served as a safe haven during periods of economic uncertainty and market turmoil. If the AI boom begins to unravel, physical gold may help reduce exposure to stock market volatility and provide an additional layer of protection to a diversified portfolio.
