A best-in-class minting process renders Fraser’s masterpieces in such sharp relief that they’re nearly lifelike. When you hold a 1 oz. Buffalo Gold Coin, you hold a piece of precious metals history in your hand.

Why Buy the 2018 Gold American Buffalo MS-70?

Unlike Gold Buffalo Bullion Coins, this selection of 2018 1 oz. Gold American Buffalos is designated with the prestigious First Strike label from the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and is available in perfect Mint State 70 condition.

A 2018 First Strike coin from PCGS designates coins issued in the first 30 days of the mint’s release for that year. The First Strike distinction means it is from among the coin’s earliest production runs.

“This designation not only adds value to modern coins,” writes PCGS, “but takes modern coin collecting to another level with multiple Mint releases each year.”

The “MS” in MS-70 stands for “Mint State.” Mint State is a coveted classification only awarded to coins that are in impeccable condition. In the coin world, “MS-70” identifies coins in perfect condition. That means no scratches, no smudges, no imperfections. They are fully struck and lustrous, free of visible marks under 5x magnification. MS-70 coins are U.S. Money Reserve's specialty!

History of the 2018 1 oz. Gold American Buffalo MS-70

Gold Buffalo Coins were first released to the public in June 2006 under Public Law 109-145, also called the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005. Title II of this act announced the striking and issuing of $50 Gold American Buffalo bullion and proof coins. This legislation marked the first time in history that the U.S. Mint produced a .9999 pure 24-karat gold coin.

The Presidential $1 Coin Act set forth guidelines for the coin’s design, production volume, price, legal tender status, and gold sourcing. It specified that Fraser’s designs for the Buffalo Nickel be used on the obverse and reverse of the Gold American Buffalo.

Few images in the history of coinage can match the iconic status of James Earle Fraser’s Buffalo Nickel. Fraser’s personal history, deeply influenced by the frontier life of the American West, informs every line—brought to life in the bold relief of the 2018 1 oz. Gold American Buffalo MS-70.

The 2018 Gold American Buffalo MS-70 Design

The Obverse Buffalo Gold Coin Design: Chiefly Native American Portrait

The obverse of the 1 oz. American Buffalo Gold Coin MS-70 features a chiefly portrait of a Native American man. It's widely accepted that this portrait is a composite of three Native Americans: Chief Two Moons of the Cheyenne, Chief Iron Tail of the Oglala Lakota, and Chief John Big Tree of the Kiowa.

To date, these three men are the only individuals who have been consistently and publicly associated with the Buffalo Nickel and therefore, the Gold Buffalo Coin. Fraser spent much of his life on the frontier, so there may have been other Native Americans who influenced his final design. No one can say for sure. The mint year, mintmark, and “LIBERTY” also appear on the obverse.

The Reverse Buffalo Gold Coin Design: Black Diamond, the American Buffalo

The strength and pride evoked by the obverse portrait are embodied in the reverse image of Black Diamond—the largest American buffalo ever held in captivity. Represented in extraordinary relief and perfect MS-70 quality, Fraser's Buffalo elevates this coin to a work of art capable of differentiating any collection.

“THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “$50,” and “1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD” also appear on the coin's reverse.

“These classic and beautiful American Indian and Buffalo designs by James Earle Fraser, which have been American favorites since they were first used in 1913, recall a golden age of coin artistry,” noted Deputy Director David A. Lebryk in a press release announcing the release of the first Gold American Buffalo coin.

How Much Do 2018 MS-70 Gold American Buffalos Cost?

2018 PCGS Certified MS-70 Gold American Buffalo Coins aren't your average gold coins. They're certified gold coins. Certified gold coin prices are based on the spot price of gold and a coin's numismatic value. When compared to bullion coins, certified gold coins can provide precious metals owners a way to maximize reward and minimize risk over a longer period.

Certified coins are evaluated and graded for their condition and rarity by a third-party grading service—in this case, the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). The higher the grade, the more perfect the coin. Coins assigned a grade of 70 are few and far between. MS-70 gold coins represent the pinnacle of precious metals ownership.
