History of the 1 oz. Silver World War II: Valor & Victory Series 4-Coin Set

Designed and crafted under the guidance of two former Directors of the United States Mint, this series commemorates some of the most significant battles and events of World War II.

From the attack on Pearl Harbor that launched the United States into the war to victory at sea during the Battle of Midway, the bravery of the soldiers who stormed the beaches of Normandy on D-Day, and the iconic victory at the Battle of Iwo Jima, the four designs of the World War II: Valor & Victory Series pay tribute to the heroes who served their nation and protected the free world through their honor and sacrifice.

The World War II: Valor & Victory Series 4-Coin Set Designs

THE ATTACK ON PEARL HARBOR SILVER COIN DESIGNS

The obverse features the Lone Sailor statue located at Pearl Harbor, constructed using steel from the Arizona shipwreck. The Lone Sailor is an iconic symbol of the United States Navy Memorial’s mission to “Honor, Recognize, and Celebrate the men and women of the Sea Services, past, present, and future.” Inscriptions include "THE LONE SAILOR,” and “U.S. NAVY MEMORIAL.”

The reverse features an image of the battleship USS Arizona and two Japanese Zero military fighter aircraft, as used by the Japanese Imperial Navy to attack Pearl Harbor. Inscriptions include “PEARL HARBOR” and the year of issue presented in Roman numerals (MMXXIV).

THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY SILVER COIN DESIGNS

The obverse features USS Yorktown, which sank after being attacked by Japanese bombers and hit by torpedoes launched from a Japanese submarine. Inscriptions include “COURAGE, SACRIFICE, VICTORY,” “CV-5” (The Yorktown’s hull number), and "4-7 JUNE 1942," the dates of the battle.

The reverse features a United States Navy Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bomber in the midst of an attack run on the Akagi, one of four Japanese aircraft carriers lost in the battle. Inscriptions include “BATTLE OF MIDWAY” and the year of issue presented in Roman numerals (MMXXIV).

THE BATTLE OF NORMANDY SILVER COIN DESIGNS

The obverse features part of Les Braves (The Brave), a monument located in Vierville-sur-Mer on Omaha Beach itself, sculpted by Anilore Banon in honor of the 60th anniversary of D-Day. Inscriptions include “MONUMENT LES BRAVES” and the coin’s weight, purity, legal-tender denomination, and nation of issue. Inscriptions include “MONUMENT LES BRAVES,” and "6 JUNE 1944," the date of the Normandy landings (D-Day).

The reverse features an interpretation of Taxis to Hell – and Back – Into the Jaws of Death, a photograph taken on June 6, 1944 by U.S. Coast Guard chief petty officer and chief photographer’s mate Robert F. Sargent. It depicts soldiers disembarking from a Coast Guard-manned landing craft—nicknamed a “taxi”—at Omaha Beach during the Normandy landings. Inscriptions include “BATTLE OF NORMANDY,” "D-DAY," and the year of issue presented in Roman numerals (MMXXIV).

THE BATTLE OF IWO JIMA SILVER COIN DESIGNS

The obverse displays an American flag and the words “Uncommon Valor Was a Common Virtue,” a reference to Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz’s famous 1945 quote regarding those who served on Iwo Jima. Nine years later, in 1954, the quote would be immortalized on the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia. Inscriptions include the U.S. Marine Corps motto "SEMPER FIDELIS" ("Always Faithful").

The reverse features a moving rendition of Joe Rosenthal’s famous photograph of six U.S. Marines raising the American flag atop Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima. Inscriptions include “BATTLE OF IWO JIMA” and the year of issue presented in Roman numerals (MMXXIV).
