THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY COIN OBVERSE DESIGN
The obverse features USS Yorktown, which sank after being attacked by Japanese bombers and hit by torpedoes launched from a Japanese submarine.
Inscriptions include “CHARLES III,” which is paired with a miniature device King Charles III's official portrait; “COOK ISLANDS” to denote the coin’s nation of issue; the coin’s gold weight and purity; the coin’s monetary denomination (Cook Island Dollars); “COURAGE, SACRIFICE, VICTORY;” “CV-5” (The Yorktown’s hull number); and "4-7 JUNE 1942," the dates of the battle.
THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY SILVER COIN REVERSE DESIGN
The reverse features a United States Navy Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bomber in the midst of an attack run on the Akagi, one of four Japanese aircraft carriers lost in the battle.
Inscriptions include “BATTLE OF MIDWAY” and the year of issue presented in Roman numerals (MMXXIV).
