Why Buy 5 oz. Proof Silver High-Relief Iwo Jima Coins?

High-relief coins are jaw-dropping coins with richer detail and brighter luster and are typically produced in fewer quantities than standard coins. The Perth Mint is the only minting institution in the world to produce this concave, "deep-dish" high-relief format.

The 5 oz. Proof Silver High-Relief Iwo Jima coin pays tributes to World War II and the Battle of Iwo Jima. This five-week battle ultimately helped U.S. forces gain control of essential airspace over the Pacific Ocean.

The Iwo Jima coin series marks the 75th anniversary of one of the most difficult and heavy-hearted battles in the history of the U.S. Marine Corps.

The 5 oz. silver high-relief coin from the Iwo Jima coin series features a mirror-proof finish, making it especially appealing to the discerning precious metals buyer. Proof coins are among the finest coins produced. They’re specially polished and struck to achieve a very detailed design, mirror-like background, and glamorous shine.

History of the 5 oz. Proof Silver High-Relief Iwo Jima Coin

U.S. Money Reserve joined forces with Australia’s Perth Mint to design and produce this 5 oz. silver high-relief coin. The Perth Mint has a long history of producing gold and silver coins.

The 5 oz. Iwo Jima High-Relief Proof Silver Coin Design

You might recognize the design featured on the reverse side of the 5 oz. silver high-relief coin. It was inspired by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal’s snapshot of six U.S. Marines raising the American flag on the highest peak of Iwo Jima. In raising the stars and stripes, American troops expressed their hope for the future—a hope that the time they had spent inching their way to victory would soon help bring an end to one of WWII’s bloodiest and longest battles.

The Reverse Iwo Jima Design: U.S. Marines Raising the Flag at Iwo Jima

The coin’s reverse features a rendition of Joe Rosenthal’s picture of six Marines raising a flag at the summit of Iwo Jima’s Mount Suribachi. Rosenthal won a Pulitzer Prize for the photo, which appeared in newspapers around the world. The image also served as a model for the Marine Corps War Memorial near Arlington National Cemetery.

Encircling the six Marines are three inscriptions:

  • IWO JIMA 75TH ANNIVERSARY
  • The year 2020 in rare Roman numeral dating (MMXX)
  • The Perth Mint’s highly recognizable “P” mintmark

The Obverse Iwo Jima Design: An American Wartime Ally

Queen Elizabeth II graces the coin’s obverse side. Her classic portrait honors America’s wartime allies Australia and Great Britain. The coin’s silver purity (.9999), size (5 oz.), and denomination $5 (TVD) are also inscribed on the front.

How Much Do 5 oz. Proof Silver High-Relief Iwo Jima Coins Cost?

Silver coin prices are determined by the spot price of silver, the coin type, the amount of silver in the coin, and the coin’s production quantity. What does this mean for the 5 oz. Silver High-Relief Iwo Jima Proof coin?

As a proof coin, the price of the 5 oz. Iwo Jima High-Relief coin is tied to spot price, availability, and condition.

The Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) guarantees each coin to be PR-70 grade.

And when it comes to production quantity, it’s safe to say that the 5 oz. Proof Silver High-Relief Iwo Jima Coin falls into the “limited availability” category.

All of these factors contribute to the coin’s current price.
