History of the 1/10 oz. Iwo Jima Gold Coin

U.S. Money Reserve worked closely with Australia’s Perth Mint to design and produce this iconic American gold coin. The design was inspired by Joseph Rosenthal’s photograph of six U.S. Marines raising the American flag on the highest peak of Iwo Jima, Mount Suribachi. Rosenthal captured a moment that signified hope. American ground troops had been slowly inching their way to victory on the island, pushing through heavily fortified bunkers and miles of tunnels to capture a strategic location that would help U.S. forces gain control of the airspace over the Pacific. Rosenthal’s photo spread far and wide, helping to raise $24 billion in war bonds and later winning a Pulitzer Prize.

This solid gold coin marks the 75th anniversary of the bloodiest battle in the history of the U.S. Marine Corps and honors the brave individuals who made the ultimate sacrifice during WWII.

The 1/10 oz. Iwo Jima Gold Coin Design

The Reverse Iwo Jima Design: Raising of the Flag at Iwo Jima

The coin’s reverse side features a moving rendition of Joe Rosenthal’s famous photograph of six U.S. Marines raising the American flag atop Mount Suribachi. The stars and stripes appear to flutter in the wind as the soldiers lean with all of their might to push the flagpole into the ground.

Encircling the scene are three inscriptions: IWO JIMA 75TH ANNIVERSARY, the year 2020 in rare Roman numeral dating (MMXX), and Perth Mint’s highly recognizable “P” mintmark.

The Obverse Iwo Jima Design: Queen Elizabeth II

The coin’s obverse honors America’s wartime allies Australia and Great Britain with a classic portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The coin’s gold purity (.9999), size (1/10 oz.), and denomination (15 dollars) are also inscribed on the front.
