Gold and the sun are associated for many reasons. Both have been worshiped by ancient civilizations ever since gold was discovered. Several major cultures have had deities or gods to personify the image of the sun. The Incas revered gold as the sweat of the sun. They believed in the ancient sun god, Inti, who was considered to be the most significant deity in Incan mythology. Perhaps the most important god in Egyptian mythology is Ra, the god of creation and the sun. He was referred to as a mountain of gold. Gold can have many shades, especially when combined with different metals, pure 24 karat gold resembles the color of the sun. Even though the color of the sun seems to be yellow, the actual color is a composite of different colors, which appear to be white to our eyes. The reason we perceive the sun as yellow is because the shortest wavelengths, like blues and violets, are scattered by the Earth's atmosphere.

The remaining wavelengths, oranges and yellows, are what we actually see. Throughout human history, gold has been associated with the sun because of its brilliance, color, power, and natural beauty. Gold has had value to humans even before becoming a form of currency. The sun is essentially the heart of our solar system and without it, there would be no life here on earth. Both gold and the sun have been an important part of our lives throughout the history of civilizations and will continue to be for many more years to come.
