Gold has once again been making headlines as the nation’s financial markets continue to face uncertainty. On April 22, 2022, Barron’s reported that gold had made yet another run at $2,000/oz., nearing its all-time-high reached in August 2020.
That same day, Barron’s reported that the stock market experienced its largest drop since October 2020. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, for example, finished the day nearly 1,000 points down.
It’s something I saw firsthand during my time as Director of the United States Mint: consumers looking to add hard assets to their portfolios to help hedge against market turbulence.
That turbulence continues to impact stock prices. On April 29, 2022, The Wall Street Journal reported drops in tech stocks, with Amazon shares falling 14%—their largest single-day drop since 2006—Apple stocks falling 3.7% in a single day, and Netflix stocks dropping by 49% over the course of April 2022.
And while gold has fallen below its all-time high, it remains up from six months ago because consumers continue to give the precious metal bumps in price by “buying the dip” and moving more of their portfolios into gold as prices become more affordable.
Some analysts believe that gold will continue to drive toward its all-time high and beyond. The Barron’s article mentioned above noted that Lawrence Lepard, managing partner of Equity Management Associates, “is betting that gold hits $3,000 [per ounce] within the next two years.”
