Why Buy 1 oz. Silver American Eagle Proof Coins?

Produced at the U.S. Mint at West Point, each Proof Silver Eagle Coin is authorized U.S. legal tender and bears globally renowned designs by Adolph A. Weinman and John Mercanti.

A History of the 1 oz. Proof Silver American Eagle Coin
First minted in 1986, in part to leverage massive silver reserves accumulated by the government for defense purposes, Proof Silver American Eagle Coins proved so popular with numismatists and others that they took the coin world by storm. The artwork carefully displayed on the obverse and reverse sides played a vital role in that popularity, which continues to this day.
Proof Silver Eagle Minting & Design
To achieve their beautiful “proof” finish, Proof Silver American Eagle Coins must undergo a special minting process.
“The U.S. Mint goes to extraordinary lengths to produce a stunningly beautiful coin, including multiple strikes and polishing of coin blanks to obtain the design detail and shining field characteristic of the coin,” says Philip N. Diehl, President of U.S. Money Reserve and former Director of the U.S. Mint.
The process begins by manually feeding polished coin blanks (pieces of silver that look like blank coins) into presses fitted with special dies. Each coin is then struck, or stamped, multiple times. This part of the process is what gives Proof American Eagles their frosted, detailed images that seem to float above a mirror-like field.
The Obverse Silver Eagle Design: Walking Liberty
The obverse side of the 1 oz. Proof Silver American Eagle Coin bears Adolph A. Weinman’s beautiful “Walking Liberty” design, initially crafted for the U.S. Half-Dollar produced from 1916 to 1947. One famed art historian described the half-dollar as “one of the greatest coins of the United States—if not of the world.”
Lady Liberty's full figure is captured on this silver proof coin. She's enveloped in folds of the American flag, with her right hand extended, almost welcoming anyone who might be approaching. She cradles branches of laurel and oak in her left arm, symbolizing both civil and military glory.
The Reverse Silver Eagle Design: Heraldic Eagle
The reverse side of the 1 oz. Proof Silver American Eagle Coin displays John Mercanti’s iconic heraldic eagle. It shows an eagle with an olive branch in one talon and arrows in the other. In its mouth is a ribbon with the Latin phrase "E Pluribus Unum" (“Out of many, one”), a phrase that served as our national motto until 1956. Thirteen stars hover above the eagle's head, symbolizing the 13 original American colonies.
