The U.S. Mint is possibly introducing new designs for the Gold and Silver American Eagle bullion coins, for the first time in more than 30 years. If approval being sought from Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin is actually granted, the designs for each respective program will be completely changed. These legal tender coins have been in use since the Silver American Eagle, and all four sizes and denominations of the Gold American Eagle were introduced back in 1986. This is not the first time a design change has been suggested for the American Eagle program to begin with. At its 2014 meeting, the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee recommended a different eagle design for the American silver dollar's reverse side. The CCAC considered only the redesign of the silver eagle dollar's reverse side, not the obverse and no changes for the obverse or reverse of the gold American Eagle were recommended at all.

The U.S. Mint has redesigned the obverse and the reverse side in several multi-year proof American Eagle Platinum coin series, but the bullion versions in that program use the same obverse and reverse designs introduced on the platinum series when it was started back in 1997. The American Eagle Gold and Silver bullion coin are the most recognizable and best-selling bullion coins in the world. If the U.S. Mint decides to reproduce this signature coin in a totally different design, it will change the gold and silver program for the U.S. Mint for the foreseeable future. But the big question is what will happen to the value of all the Gold Eagle sets and coins that are all currently sitting in consumers portfolios? Especially when they're no longer producing those coins anymore. It'd be very, very interesting to see.
