Narrator: What are the right gold coins to own? Gold bars and gold bullion may be appropriate for short-term cash reserves, but certain US Government gold coins may hold much higher long-term profit potential than others; Gold American Eagle Proofs, for example. They are some of the most evocative and cherished designs ever struck on a US gold coin. As depicted by the famed American sculptor, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the obverse design features a full-length figure of Lady Liberty holding a torch in her right hand with an olive branch in her left. And the reverse design features a male eagle carrying an olive branch, flying above a nest containing a female eagle with her hatchlings.

Gold American Eagle Proof coins also undergo a unique minting process that involves gold blanks being struck multiple times by special dies at the US Mint. This specialized process produces a finished gold coin whose image appears to float above the coin's mirror-like background. Since 1986 the US Mint has purposely created these unique gold proof coins in relatively low numbers, specifically with the discerning collector in mind, making Gold American Eagle Proof coins often worth considerably more than a gold bar or a piece of gold bullion.
